Before I was an ABA Consultant, I was an ABA Mom! When my son, Lucas, was diagnosed with autism in 1999, we implemented an intensive (30 hr/wk) home-based ABA program. With my business background and experience, I was able to run an efficient and effective behavioral program for my son.
Originally, this website was created to provide helpful hints for ABA Moms. And, helpful hints will still be provided throughout! However, I am now most interested in promoting "empowerment" to families of kids with autism.
I have a son who was diagnosed with autism at age 3 years-3 months old. He is now 17 year old, in a typical high school setting, is highly-social (the most social one of our family) and is living the normal life of a teenager (including DRIVING!) Friends and family ask about our journey. I'd love to share it now! (Maybe I can get Lucas to contribute, too! We'll see!)
I mentioned "empowerment" to families of kids with autism...
If my husband and I had listened to and followed the advice of medical professionals, school professionals, and others therapy providers, Lucas would not be where he is today. We followed evidenced-based treatment--Applied Behavior Analysis--and learned as much as we could about ABA to provide him with the best chance for his success. Occasionally, we succumbed to some fad treatments (though absolutely nothing was invasive.) So, we know the temptations of following the latest treatment for a "cure."
My mom often says, "I don't know that I could have done what you did to help your son." Of course, I believe she could have. But, what does that mean? We all have it in us to do what needs to be done for our kids. After all, the parent is the one who cares the most for his/her own child. You are the one who will make the difference!
I'll share journal entries, ABA program documents, and other information that may inspire you or provide you with ideas! I hope to show you how YOU can be the driving force in creating and maintaining a happy child and a happy family!
Mom to Lucas, a really cool 18-year-old!
P.S. There are many special moms & dads who have sacrificed to get their children the services they need! Kudos! Your kids are lucky to have you!
Lucas at 3 1/2 years old!
